Speaking In Newfolden

10/22/2014

Colossians 4:2-4 Continue steadfastly in prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgiving. At the same time, pray also for us, that God may open to us a door for the word, to declare the mystery of Christ, on account of which I am in prison- that I may make it clear, which is how I ought to speak.

This coming Sunday through Wednesday I will be speaking at Westaker Free Lutheran Church in Newfolden, Minnesota. My prayer is that the Word of God might be clearly communicated. If you think of it would you pray that: The Law and Gospel would be rightly proclaimed and heard. That the Lord would bring those He desires under the hearing of His Word. Pray for strength for me as I preach during these days. Pray also for my wife and children back home. I am thankful for the open door that God has given me at this time. May the Cross of Christ be the focus. Thank you.

Then Fell The Lord's Fire -- With Heart

“Therefore, having this ministry by the mercy of God, we do not lose heart.”  2 Cor. 4:1

The things of this world will certainly tear at us trying to cause us to lose heart. I was reminded of this just a few days ago when I heard that one of my cousins, a young man in his twenties, died in a car accident. Your heart sinks. It is a reminder to me that right around the corner everything might change. Indeed the Devil prowls around seeking whom he may devour (1 Peter 5:8). Leading people to despair, to losing heart, is sometimes a slow process of being chewed up by the Devil.

Then Fell The Lord's Fire - Without Shame

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation.”
  (Romans 1:16 ESV)

Just before Christmas on December 20th, 1960 Bishop Bo Giertz preached a sermon on the above verse for an ordination service. It almost seems strange to preach about confidence in the Gospel to men who have been learning about it and how to communicate it. Wouldn’t they be confident in it? It seems likely that they were being encouraged by Giertz to cling steadfastly to that confidence in the Gospel. We unfortunately realize that the Gospel is often hard to confess and that many (even among pastors) have been ashamed of the Gospel.

Then Fell The Lord's Fire -- For Your Souls

“I will most gladly spend and be spent for your souls.
If I love you more, am I to be loved less?” (2 Cor. 12:15 ESV)

The concept of sacrifice is prominent throughout the scriptures. There is the very obvious animal sacrifice throughout the Old Testament which was always a looking forward to and a pointing out of the sacrifice, Jesus Christ. We also have the recognition of the sacrifices of God’s people; sacrifices that are made out of and through faith in Christ. The Apostle Paul speaks of this in Romans 12:1-2 when he speaks about “a living sacrifice.”
